Chinese Herb Kudzu May Help Drinkers Cut Down

In Small Study, Harvard Researchers Find Kudzu Extract Reduces Drinking

An extract from the Chinese herb kudzu may help drinkers cut down on drinking, according to a new pilot study.
“It didn’t stop the drinking,” says researcher David M. Penetar, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. “They still drank, but they drank less.”
He studied the extract puerarin. It is one of the substances known as isoflavones found in kudzu.
The study is published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Drinking Problems

More remedies are needed to help drinkers who overdo it cut down, Penetar says. The medications approved for treating alcohol abuse and dependence don’t work for everyone, he says.
About 1 in 6 U.S. adults binge drinks, according to a CDC report. Experts disagree on the definition of binge drinking. According to the CDC, binge drinking is having four or more drinks on one occasion for a woman and five or more for a man.

Kudzu: A Brief History

In Chinese pharmacy books, kudzu is listed as a possible treatment for alcohol-related hangovers and cravings, Penetar tells WebMD.
“Some of the references go back to 600 A.D.,” he says.
Today, it’s used in China and other countries to treat coronary problems and blood-flow problems, Penetar says. “It has a good safety record already.”
It’s touted as a hangover remedy. However, studies looking at the effects of kudzu extracts have produced mixed findings, Penetar says.

Herb to Cut Drinking: Study Details

Penetar’s team studied 10 men and women, average age 26. They typically drank about 18 alcoholic beverages a week.
“We set up a lab room to make it look like an apartment,” Penetar says.
The lab-turned-apartment had a reclining chair, TV, DVD player, and a refrigerator stocked with each person’s favorite beer. Non-alcoholic beverages were also available.
The researchers conducted four different sessions:
  • The first session was to make the participants familiar with the surroundings. They drank but took no herbs.
  • Before the second, they took either 1,200 milligrams of puerarin or identical-looking placebo pills for a week. They came to the lab and could drink as much as they wanted, up to six beers.
  • Two weeks later, they came back for a drinking session, without taking the herb or the placebo.
  • For a final session, they took whichever pill they didn’t take the first time. They took it for a week, then went to the lab again for a drinking session.
The participants provided urine samples so the researchers could confirm they were compliant.
They were given dinner after the sessions and sent home in a taxi once their blood alcohol level declined.

Results of Puerarin Treatment

“When they were treated with puerarin they drank about a beer less than when they were treated with placebo,” he says.
On average, the men and women drank 3.5 beers after placebo and 2.4 after puerarin.
After placebo treatment, three people drank five beers and one drank six. After the herbal treatment, no one drank five or six.
When they had the herbal treatment, people also took more sips to finish a beer, took longer to down it, and reduced their sip size, Penetar found.
During the week of puerarin treatment, they drank slightly less than during the placebo week — three drinks a day compared to 3.4.
No serious side effects were reported.?
For drinkers who want to cut down, this may help, Penetar says.
He does not know exactly how it works. “We suspect it may work because it increases blood flow,” he says. “It may deliver alcohol to the brain’s reward center faster. So you get an effect sooner; therefore, you don’t drink as much.”
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism funded the study. One study co-author is a member of the scientific advisory board at Natural Pharmacia International. It provided the puerarin. Another co-author is an employee of NPI.
Penetar holds the investigational new-drug application for puerarin. McLean Hospital has a licensing agreement with NPI for the extract.
The hope, Penetar says, is to market the extract over-the-counter.
The kudzu root is already widely sold as a dietary supplement. At the dose used in the study, three weeks’ worth costs about $ 6.

Herb to Curb Drinking: Perspective

“I’m hopeful but skeptical,” says David J. Hanson, PhD, professor emeritus of sociology at State University of New York at Potsdam. He reviewed the study for WebMD.
The new study has a good research design, he says, but a very small sample size.
“There is no understanding of the mechanism whereby this might work,” Hanson tells WebMD. “If we know that, we would have more confidence in the findings.”
In Penetar’s study, the men and women took the puerarin for a week. Would people in real life do that?
“It depends on a person’s motivation,” Hanson says. Someone who is told by their doctor to cut down on drinking for health reasons might, he says.
Penetar knows that is an obstacle. They are now studying a single large dose before a planned drinking session to see if it works, too.

How Extra Pounds Impact Cholesterol

weight scale with measuring tape

Carrying a few extra pounds? They could be making your cholesterol worse. Excess weight tends to increase your harmful LDL cholesterol levels, and one recent study linked a high ratio of body fat with higher levels of LDL.
Three Key Measurements
Do you use a bathroom scale to check your weight? Pounds aren’t the only way to gauge health. Here are other, more accurate ways:
  • BMI: You can get an estimate of your body fat based on calculations of your height and weight.
  • Waist circumference: Anything more than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. To measure your waist circumference, find the area between your lowest rib and the top of your hipbone. Place a measuring tape on bare skin and wrap it around the narrowest part. The tape should be snug, but not constricting.
  • Waist-to-hip ratio: This measurement takes into account the proportions of your body by comparing your waist and hip circumferences.
The good news is losing even a little extra weight may help lower your LDL and triglycerides while raising beneficial HDL cholesterol levels.

9 Strange But True Health Tips

You probably run across some of these studies, too; the major ones get a lot of media attention. That’s why I actually prefer sifting through smaller, more obscure periodicals, hunting for research no one else is reporting. For example, over the past week I’ve learned:

  • You can lose weight by paying for groceries with cash; turns out, you’re more likely to buy unhealthy foods if you pay with a credit card.
  • Taking a vitamin D supplement fortifies your muscles, making them less prone to injury.
  • Flirting at work is a hidden sign that your job isn’t right for you.
  • Google is making us forgetful, because we’re less likely to try to remember information that we know is readily accessible.

Who knew, right? Here are nine more fascinating strange-but-true study findings we’ve run across over the past few years.
Live Longer by Changing Your Name
People with “positive” initials—ones that spell out things like J.O.Y. or W.O.W.—live nearly 4-1/2 years longer than people with neutral initials, according to a University of California, San Diego study. D.U.D.’s live nearly three years less. Other initials that may shorten life: I.L.L. and D.E.D.

Keep Your Mind Sharper by Being a Jerk
Research from the U.S. Administration on Aging suggests there’s a marked difference between how younger and older people interpret misplacing their car keys. A young guy usually blames someone else. An old man typically blames himself. Never use your age as an excuse—you’ll remain sharper longer.

Break a High Fever With Your Armpits
Anything up to 102°F is mild and can be treated by drinking plenty of fluids. But to quickly bring down a reading above that, put an ice pack under your arm or near your groin. Icing either spot will cool your body’s core. It’s uncomfortable, but it works fast. Then see a doctor.

Prevent Claustrophobia by Smelling This Fruit
If you get nervous in small spaces such as subways, elevators, and that closet of an office they stuck you in, visit your local fruit stand. A sniff of green apple may help relieve claustrophobic sensations, says Dr. Alan Hirsch, M.D., director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation. Carry one with you. Also, if you’re selling your house, placing a basket of fresh green apples on the table may make potential buyers perceive the house as larger.

Disinfect a Wound with Honey
No Neosporin in the house? Dab the cut with honey before covering it with a bandage. Believe it or not, honey has powerful antibacterial properties. A study in the Archives of Surgery found that honey is capable of destroying almost all strains of the most common wound-infecting bacteria.

Stop Bleeding with This Spice
Next time you nick yourself in the kitchen, reach for the black pepper, says Roberta Lee, M.D., vice chair of the department of integrative medicine at the Beth Israel Medical Center. Run cold water over the wound to clean it, using soap if you were handling meat. Then sprinkle on the pepper and apply pressure. In no time, the bleeding will stop. Turns out, black pepper has analgesic, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. And don’t worry—it won’t sting.

See Your Tailor to Cure Back Pain
If you have an aching back, it may be because one of your legs is shorter than the other, says Steven McCaw, Ph.D., a researcher at Illinois State University. Even a slight imbalance can cause the spine to curve to the short side when you walk or run. Eventually, the bend puts painful pressure on disks. Most people can’t tell if their legs are different lengths, but a tailor can. Ask one for a quick measurement. If he finds an imbalance, correct the problem with a therapeutic, Dr. Scholl-type insert or see a podiatrist for a custom-made orthotic.

Massage Away Nicotine Cravings
If you’re a smoker who’s trying to quit, try this simple trick the next time a craving hits: Rub the skin between your index fingers and thumbs and the center of your palms. A study in Preventive Medicine found that men using this technique smoked 25 percent fewer cigarettes in a month than 10 quitters who used traditional distraction methods such as chewing gum. The quick self-massage evidently calms you and keeps your hands busy.

Drink This to Lower Your Cholesterol
The fiber supplement Metamucil can help lower elevated cholesterol levels. In one study, men who took one packet mixed in water before each meal for eight weeks experienced drops in LDL cholesterol averaging 7 percent. Metamucil also helps to lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and the risk of heart disease, according to the National Fiber Council.

Prenatal Pesticide Exposure May Harm Kids’ Brains

Common Crop Pesticide Chlorpyrifos May Be Linked With Structural Changes in Developing Brain, Experts Find

Prenatal exposure to a pesticide used on many crops may be linked with abnormal changes in a child’s developing brain, scientists report.
Compared to children with low prenatal exposure, those with high exposure to the pesticide chlorpyrifos had abnormalities in the cortex (the outer area of the brain), says Virginia Rauh, ScD, professor and deputy director of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
The cortex helps govern intelligence, personality, muscle movement, and other tasks.
“In areas of the cortex, we detected both enlarged and reduced volumes that were significantly different from the normal brain,” she tells WebMD. “This suggests the process of normal brain development has been disturbed in some way.”
The study is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ Early Edition.
In 2001, the U.S. EPA banned the residential use of chlorpyrifos. It still allows it on crops. It can also be sprayed in public places such as golf courses.
Some environmental advocates have petitioned the EPA to ban agricultural use.

Prenatal Exposure to Pesticides: Study Details

Rauh’s team selected 40 children from a larger group of 369 children, followed from birth.
All had been born between 1998 and 2001, before the household-use ban. Rauh had sent their umbilical cord blood samples to the CDC to analyze pesticide levels.
For this study, she selected 20 children with high prenatal exposure and 20 with low prenatal exposure. She took MRIs of their brains when they were about 6 to 11 years old.
Overall brain size did not differ much between the two groups. However, the high-exposure group had enlargements in many areas and reduced volumes in other areas.
The findings reflect those from animal studies, Rauh says.
In other studies, Rauh has found higher exposure to the pesticide is linked with lower IQs and a decline in working memory in children.
The pesticide works by blocking an enzyme needed by pests — and people — for proper nerve functioning. It belongs to a class known as organophosphates.

Chlorpyrifos and the Food Supply

In 2007, the Natural Resources Defense Council petitioned the EPA to cancel all agricultural registrations for the pesticide. The EPA is reviewing the role of chlorpyrifos in agriculture.

Symptoms of poisoning from the pesticide include nausea, dizziness, confusion, and sometimes loss of respiratory muscle control and death, according to the NRDC.

‘Prenatal Pesticide Exposure: Two Perspectives

The new research finding is concerning, says Sonya Lunder, MPH, senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group. EWG supports a ban on the pesticide.
“Once you have changed the way the brain is born, and the structure, we are talking about things you can’t offset with a good education or a good diet,” she tells WebMD.
Meanwhile, industry groups say the pesticide should not be banned.
On a web page, “Chlorpyrifos Protects,” Dow AgroSciences, its manufacturer, says: “Growers clearly need a trusted, well-established product to protect a wide range of crops from a diverse spectrum of damaging pests.”
Since the pesticide was registered by the EPA in 1965, its use has become common in more than 50 crops, according to Dow. Among them are citrus fruits, apples, soybeans, sweet corn, and peanuts.
Research offers little support for claims that prenatal exposure could lead to reduced IQ scores, according to Dow.

Advice for Pregnant Women

Rauh advises women who are pregnant to avoid farming jobs.
Wash produce well before eating, she says. Buying organic produce is a good idea, she says, though not always practical. “It’s a very expensive way to go and I think is out of reach of the average person,” Rauh says.

15 health tips you can implement today

New health tips are a dime a dozen, right ? Well, maybe in some places that is true. Here we are going to talk about fifteen health tips to implement today to your life and prove that they work.

15<br />
health tips postThe first is to brush your teeth daily. Gum disease not only can cause you to lose your teeth, it can make you have heart problems. Consider this: scientists have confirmed that gum disease likely causes destructive bacteria to flood the blood system. Limit this problem by brushing your teeth often.
Another tip to use today is to cut back on processed sugar. That means most all soft drinks. They are loaded with it. Why cut back on this ingredient ? Large levels of sugar causes quick and damaging levels of insulin to be released into the blood. Your pancreas makes the insulin. If it has to work overtime and you already have a terrible diet your pancrease can become exhausted. When your pancreas becomes exhausted and can not make enough insulin to counteract the level of sugar in your blood, diabetes can result. Stop the abnormal intake of processed sugar and the chances of this will decrease. You can help prevent diabetes in your body by decreasing the amount of processed sugar going into your mouth.
The third tip is to start an exercise routine today. Modern medicine finally found out recently that exercising helps prevent cancer. It also increases your life span. If that is not reason enough, stop reading right here. Just thirty minutes a day of strenous exercise makes a load of difference if your life is an inactive one. Try it.
Listen to people who are not totally obese. It is a fine line, but those who live longer are not of “normal weight” according to Psychology Today. Those who are slightly overweight are more likely to live the longest. This study was done on Canadian people. Their climate is a cold one and likely had something to do with the results. Nevertheless, it is something to think about.
Eat chocolate. I think I heard you say: “Wow !” ? This statement needs some qualification. It is not just any chocolate. Real dark chocolate is high in antioxidants that reduce the effects of free radicals in the body. If you were thinking that you could eat a milky way and have better health, it is just not that way. It must be dark chocolate and have very little sweeteners.
Here is a twin to along with that last tip; consume less artificial sweeteners. There are many that are just plain bad for you. The sweetener called aspartame or nutrasweet is not an ingredient to put into your body. Your body changes the aspartame into formic acid. Guess what else uses formic acid ? Fire ants use this when they bite you. They inject you with this ingredient, which is what they use for poison. It is the reason “fire ants” have “fire”. Why put the poison of fire ants in your body ? You are doing that when you eat aspartame.

Stop smoking cigarettes. While you are at it, include cigars and marijuana with that. You already know why. It can help cause cancer and it also causes others who are breathing in the second-hand smoke to develop cancer. Just stop smoking.
Stop over-indulging in alcohol. This substance is the reason why many have problems with their liver and other areas. Alcohol is acidic and if you are overweight, this can easily cause an acidic atmosphere in your body. This type of atmosphere is the same one that cancer thrives in. Wine taken in modest amounts, about one small glass a day, by contrast, is good for you. Liquors and other strong drinks are not good for much, except for perhaps cleaning your house.
Get at least one hour a day out in the sun. Centenarians ( those who live to be at least one hundred years old ) have a few things in common. Working out in the sun is one of those things. If you work indoors and do not see much sun, change this aspect of your life.
Taking a que from those centenarians, another tip is to start enjoying life. If you want a good health tip this is an important one. One of the common denominators of those who live to age one hundred and beyond is that they are not grumpy. Changing your attitude for the better is good for you.
Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. This may seem like an impossible task. Most fruit and vegetables in the hands of the Western world come from other countries, and it is not that fresh. This tip is taken again from those centenarians. Many of them eat fruit from a plant grown in their own yard. This is a true “victory garden” for health.
Learn to keep your PH level balanced. The PH level is basic to all health. Cancer likes to have a low PH level to live in. Do you have one ? Learn to use PH paper to check out your own PH level and you will know more about basic health than most people.
Get rid of the blind faith you have in the medical industry. They just are not worthy of it. Read more online. This is something you are doing now, and it such an important health tip I will say it twice; stop thinking that the medical industry has all the answers. They clearly do not. This change in thinking will benefit you greatly, so start today.
